AI vs AI - Artificial Intelligence vs Augmented Intelligence

We have all heard of artificial intelligence, but what is augmented intelligence (IA) and why is it important in the age of AI?

We all have this sci-fi notion of AGI (artificial general intelligence), where the AI has a consciousness of its own like the Terminator. Although this is in the far future, what is more realistic currently is augmented intelligence. In short, this is where AI systems and humans work together to achieve a goal.

Augmented intelligence is when artificial intelligence gathers the data and presents it to the human for decision making. For example, an online retailer might have a recommendation system that recommends products but does not take the necessary actions without a human's interaction. Another example is in cars, where we now have cameras to detect blind spots — if we are changing lanes, the AI might warn us, but we are in charge of the action.
